Sydney Water supplies more than 1.7 billion litres of water to more than 1.6 million homes and businesses each day. It provides drinking water, wastewater services, and some stormwater services to customers in the communities of Sydney, the Blue Mountains and the Illawarra.
The drought in Sydney meant that Sydney Water had to identify alternate water sources to provide a reliable water supply. The NSW Government and Sydney Water are committed to recycling 70 billion litres of water annually by 2015: 12% of Sydney's water needs. The industry also uses 12% of Sydney’s potable water. Using recycled water can decrease the impact local industry have on potable water.
The Rosehill Recycled Water Treatment Plant consists of ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis to treat secondary effluent from the Liverpool Sewerage Treatment Plant. The plant will produce 4.3 billion litres of high quality treated water suitable for irrigation, cooling towers, as manufacturing water and boiler feed. Local industry will use this water to reduce their potable water consumption including Marubeni, Sydney Turf Club and Shell Refinery. The plant can also be upgraded to produce an extra 3 billion litres if demand is increased in the future.
